Welcome to the University of Oklahoma!  As parents of OU students already know and parents of incoming OU students will soon learn, OU is an exceptional place. As parents, we can continue to support our college age children even when they are away at school. We can encourage them to set goals, and to develop relationships with professors and staff members and take advantage of the many resources and student opportunities available at OU to assist them in reaching their goals.  Sooner Parents, OU’s parents association, provides many helpful resources for parents, as well as scholarships for students whose parent(s) are members of Sooner Parents, and support for a variety of student services and organizations across campus.

If you have not already done so, I invite you to join Sooner Parents online at parents.ou.edu and follow us on our new Facebook page. The primary goal of Sooner Parents, in addition to providing parent resources and the services discussed above, is to keep OU parents informed about important dates, announcements, opportunities for your student on campus, and opportunities for you as well.  Please feel free to reach out to me or any of our volunteers with questions, comments or concerns regarding your student’s OU experience. Sooner Parents is your association and we are here for you!

Sooner Parents has a number of additional programs which we plan to continue: home football game ticket access; local business discounts; numerous $1,000 scholarships for students whose parents are members of Sooner Parents; a drawing each semester for a $500 scholarship (given to the student of a Sooner Parents member); support for our signature Sooner Parent Mini-Grant program which funds $10,000 of initiatives across campus; monthly Sooner Parents e-newsletters; and continued support for worthwhile programs such as Sooners Helping Sooners and student emergency funds. There are many areas and programs in which you can participate as your schedule allows. You also will enjoy the opportunity to work with great university professionals who are guiding our students toward a successful future.

My wife Linda and I have been privileged to send both of our children to OU.  Our daughter Lauren will be a sophomore this fall. Our son Matthew will graduate in May with a degree in Risk Management from the nationally renowned Price College of Business.  Both of them have taken advantage of many wonderful opportunities available to them at OU, including leadership development and studying abroad in Italy and Spain.  Their Sooner experience has been everything we, as parents, hoped it would be.

We all know how quickly time passes. I am confident that your family’s experience at the University of Oklahoma will be as positive as my family’s has been.  Again, I encourage you to join Sooner Parents, and to contact me if you any question about the association.
